I just had coffee with a lady who’s “in between jobs” and she asked me for some advice about her Personal Brand.
I was pleasantly surprised to hear she believes Personal Branding is important, not only for entrepreneurs but also for job seekers. I still meet too many people who think Personal Branding is for braggers and is just some kind of hype. Well, it’s not!
Whether you are looking for a job or new clients, you need to be able to position yourself and build a reputation in order to become the go-to-person in your field.
Anyway, I asked her some basic questions in order to find out how ‘mature’ she was with regards to Personal Branding. And I found out that she was still a ‘baby’. So that’s why I decided to write down some of the most important questions you need to ask yourself in order to be able to build your Personal Brand.
Here they are:
- What’s your mastery?
In other words, what do you have to offer? What are your competencies and talents? Your passion? Your WHY? You must be good at something, right? I hope you do, because otherwise, no need to start working on your Personal Brand. It will be useless. You have to be able to do a good job and/or deliver a good service. The packaging is just the cherry on top of the cake.
- Who’s your target audience?
You can’t do everything for everybody. You need to focus. Focus on your mastery and focus on your target audience. People do business with people, so who’s that person you want to do ‘business’ with? What does he or she look like? What’s troubling him or her?
- How can you help your target audience and solve his/her problem in a unique way?
What’s your magic cure to your target audience’s pain? It’s important you always have a giving and caring mindset. Give Give Give Get, is one of my motto’s. You are not trying to sell something or yourself, you are there to help your target audience. Now tell us how.
- What’s the message you want to get across?
Once you know your unique stuff you have to offer to your specific target audience, you need to be able to communicate this in order to build rapport, to build your reputation, to get that target audience to begin to know-like-trust you and to become the go-to-person in your field. So we are talking Unique Selling Proposition, Elevator Pitch, Marketing Message here. And we’re also talking about authenticity and empathy here. Remember, it’s about them (your target audience), not about you.
- How will you get your message across?
You what you have to offer, you have your pitch ready. Now what channels will you use to be “heard” by your target audience. Choose wisely, choose those channels that feel right to you AND your target audience. Don’t bother with Pinterest if your “ideal client” is not on Pinterest. What online and/or offline channels will you use? Social media, website, networking, public speaking, partnerships, press……..
