Ask yourself these questions… (PART 2)

Last week I started this serie of 3 blog posts regarding the questions you need to ask yourself before you jump into the Freelance adventure.

Here’s part 2: Again with several assignments for you! So let’s get moving.

4. Do you have a purpose?
Why are you doing what you are doing? Why do you want to become a Freelancer/Entrepreneur?

People give me answers like: freedom, money, being my own boss etc… Big words and I have no doubt these are the main reasons why people decide to become freelancer. However it does not give you the focus you need in business life.

And if you do not have focus, chances are you will spend a lot of time on the wrong things. What you need, is to focus on the RIGHT thing: your purpose, your why. 

My client, Marielle Vanhoef, was struggling to identify what she really wanted to do and why. Together we discovered her purpose : “I help female entrepreneurs grow their business & income, not for the sake of the money but for the person you become on your path towards it.” That purpose and that focus, discovered during our Celebrity Day, turned out to be a real client attraction tool – she immediately had 11 high end clients for her program!

It starts with your purpose – next you need to set priority. Eg what’s the number 1 thing you’ll do today in order to reach your purpose?

5. Do you have a financial cushion?
How will you earn money? When will you earn money? Immediately? After a couple of months? Will there be a steady flow of income? or is it uncertain? If it is al not so clear, it is vital you have some kind of financial cushion.

I always tell clients they should be able to live without an income during 6-12 months. OK, it is clear it all depends on your situation, but it is important you do not worry about money all the time because that kills your creativity, your productivity, your joy. 

Another thing to think about is passive income (passive income is an income received on a regular basis, with little to no effort required to maintain it. By contrast, active income is money that stops coming to you when you stop working.)

Example: my Lead-with-LinkedIn online training is mainly passive income now. I recorded it once and now, Freelancers who wish to build their online Personal Brand, pimp their LinkedIn profile and broaden their network, can buy it online. And me, personally, I do not have a lot of work anymore (only an individual implementation session with the freelancer)


  1. What’s the minimum income you need each month? Take that sum and multiply it by 6 or 12. That’s the financial cushion you need. Also think about ways to cut costs.
  2. Figure out what you can do to earn passive income. It’s something I teach my clients too.

6. Are you ready to promote yourself?
You are a freelancer (or soon to be), which means you have a business to run (at least your YOU-business). So, you will have to hold several balls in the air, you will have to wear different hats: marketing, sales, finance, admin, operations …. And you will have to attract clients.

In a business where we sell our services, this means we “sell ourselves”.

So are you ready to go out there and promote yourself? Are you ready to build your Personal Brand? Personal Branding is the BEST way to sell yourself without feeling salesy, without being a bragger. 

One of my clients Ann Baeke has been a coach & leadership trainer for quite some time now and she is brilliant in what she does. Still she had difficulties standing out from the competition and getting noticed. Together we worked on her Personal Branding. Being an introvert and high sensitive person it felt pretty scary to her. However you needn’t suddenly become an extrovert or a bragger or a show-off. Please no.

One ot the things she did in order to build her reputation and Personal Brand is blogging. And this has turned out to be a big success. Did you know that one of her last blog posts had almost 4000 readers on LinkedIn! Pfew
